Bordeaux mixture is a mixture of copper (II) sulphate and quicklime used as a fungicide in vineyards. It is used against fungal diseases seen in the garden, nursery, and field plants, especially grapevine “downy mildew" plant disease caused by "Plasmopara viticola" fungus. It was invented in the Bordeaux region of France. It has been used extensively for more than a century.
In addition to controlling fungal infections on grape vines, Bordeaux mixture is also widely used to combat plant diseases such as potato blight, peach leaf curl and black spot.
Since Bordeaux mixture is approved for use in organic agriculture, it is used as a preservative in many plant diseases by both organic agriculture producers and non-organic agriculture producers.
Additionally, it is used in the fight against olive knot disease.
